Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation, as defined by the National Park Service, acknowledges the need to alter or add to a historic property to meet continuing or changing uses while retaining the property’s historic character.

Restoration

Restoration, as defined by the National Park Service, depicts a property at a particular period of time in its history, while removing evidence of other periods.

For example, if the exterior panels of a Lustron had been covered with vinyl siding and the owner opted to remove the siding and repair the panels beneath, that would be a restoration project.
